1. WHAT HAPPENS IF WORK WAS DONE AT MY HOUSE WITHOUT A PERMIT?
There are a few things that will happen. The work may be required to be exposed for code compliance. This includes the footings, framing, electrical, plumbing, hvac and insulation. Or you may be required to submit letters from licensed mechanical contractors certifying the work was done in compliance with the current code (does not include Footings). The contractors will also be required to obtain mechanical permits for the work.
2. HOW MUCH WILL THIS COST?
The fees are based on the estimated cost of the work being done as well as certain fixed fees. Please see the Fee Schedule item under general information.
3. WHAT KIND OF WORK IS COMMONLY DONE WITHOUT PERMITS?
Just a few are basement finishes, kitchen remodeling, sheds and decks are an example of the most common work done without permits.
4. WHAT IS MY FIRST STEP?
Come into the Building Department and obtain a General Landuse Application (Checkoff List) and that will tell you the departments you will need to see for approvals on the specific work you will be doing.
5. HOW LONG DOES THE PROCESS TAKE TO OBTAIN A PERMIT?
A week at the most before you get an actual permit in hand. This is barring any difficulties that may be encountered with other departments concerning Zoning, Wetlands and Health Department issues.
6. DURING WHICH HOURS CAN I OBTAIN A PERMIT?
The hours for plan reviews are basically 8:00am to 10:00am. It is always best to call and make sure the departments you need to see are available on your intended day.
7. WHY DO I NEED A PERMIT?
Because all work is regulated by the State of Connecticut Building Code. If items are not properly installed and inspected, this could lead to certain life safety issues. This is protection for the owner.
8. DO I NEED A PERMIT?
When you are unsure if a permit is required always consider it is unless the Building Department tells you otherwise.
