10 Reasons to Support the Town’s Lamp Post Project

  1. The lighting plan will make Wilton a more attractive pedestrian environment and stimulate local business activity. The Town has seen a number of shops close. We want to attract better stores and build the business tax base, which also helps reduce residential taxes.
  2. More consistent lighting in the Center and lighting along River Road will improve pedestrian safety and encourage more citizens to walk in the Center in the evening.
  3. The light fixtures selected are energy efficient and were chosen after a review of all available light systems. Fixtures are high quality, minimum maintenance and have a 10 year warranty on the lamp systems from Phillips Electric.
  4. Lamp posts will provide a common architectural element to help unify the Town Center, which contains an eclectic mixture of architecture styles.
  5. The lamp post project has been approved by the Planning and Zoning Commission and is consistent with the Town’s Plan of Conservation and Development. The Inland Wetlands Commission approved the installation plans and the Police Department/Police Commission also support the project. Lastly, the capital project was recently approved by town vote after the Annual Town Meeting.
  6. Installing lamp posts in Wilton is a first step to a number of planned improvements. During installation, new concrete curbs will be installed as electrical conduit is laid in the opened trench. The Town also plans to continue to improve sidewalks, signage and plantings.
  7. Most communities the size of Wilton have lamp posts in the town center. Lamp posts are not viewed as a luxury expenditure, but an investment in municipal safety and improved infrastructure.
  8. The Town Department of Public Works will be the installation’s general contractor to enable the job to be done at least cost to the community.
  9. The project’s cost will be shared with Wilton citizens and businesses. 40% of the required funds will be raised by individual/family and local business contributions. By generous and voluntary contributions to the lamp post project, Wilton’s spirit will be demonstrated, as well as the desire to improve the center of our community.
  10. Support for the project to show your “Pride in our Town.” That’s the theme for our forthcoming annual report and it also applies to this project. Let’s all show our pride in Wilton and contribute to this timely and progressive community project and may be made by credit card. All contributions are tax-deductible.
