Town Meeting and Town-Wide Voting on Proposed Budget

Under Wilton's charter, each year's proposed budget must be presented to the Town's residents at an open meeting and then be put to the ballot.

Town Budget for 2008-2009 Goes To Town Meeting and Voting Begins

The auditorium of Middlebrook School was filled on Tuesday night with Wilton residents who came to hear details of the Town's proposed budget for the next fiscal year and to express their opinions on its provisions. The Town Meeting is a traditional part of Wilton's charter and goes back to the founding of the Town.

The meeting was chaired by Robert Russell, former First Selectman, who was elected moderator by voice vote at the beginning of the meeting. The agenda included presentations by Robert Kelso, chairman of the Board of Finance; First Selectman William Brennan; Karen Birck, chairman of the Board of Education; and Gilmore Bray, vice chairman of the Board of Education. Residents came to the microphones for extensive discussion of line items in the budget, but no changes to the proposed budget were adopted by the vote of those present at the Town Meeting.

The next step in the budget process is a Town-wide vote, which began after the meeting Tuesday night. Residents who did not vote on Tuesday will have another opportunity to vote this Saturday. The vote will determine whether the proposed budget and mill rate for taxation will go into effect on July 1.
