Coronavirus Update-Cases & 2020 US Census

April 12th – Happy Easter to those who are celebrating.  It was great to see so many of you today while out walking. Unfortunately, tomorrow won’t be as nice, as a powerful storm system with wind gusts of up to 65 mph is forecasted.  Power outages could be possible.  Eversource has written to say they will be in emergency mode tomorrow and they understand the importance of quick restoration with so many people working from home.  If you haven't already signed up with Eversource for outages you can do so on their website.  Their outage map is a helpful tool to understand the extent of the outages in Wilton and the surrounding areas.

Today’s new test results were fairly light.  CT DPH reports 12,035 laboratory-confirmed statewide cases with 5,534 or 46% in Fairfield County and 94 in Wilton. Approximately 4% of total reported cases or 501cases have not yet been assigned to a municipality.  Deaths have risen to 554, with 248 in Fairfield County. The number of cases currently hospitalized increased to 1,654 with an increase of 12 to 688 in Fairfield County.

As shared in yesterday’s update, the Governor and the CT DPH are focused on reducing the spread of the virus in nursing homes.  To date, patients from nursing homes account for approximately 10% of statewide hospitalizations and 35% of deaths.

Please continue to behave as if you have the virus and as if those around you do as well.

If you are part of the 40% of Wilton households that have not completed the 2020 US Census, I encourage you to do so. Census results have an impact on planning and funding for hospitals, disaster response, fire departments, schools, highways, and much more.  The results of the census also determine the number of seats each state will have in the U.S. House of Representatives, and they are used to draw congressional and state legislative districts.  You can complete the census online, by phone, or by mail.  Visit the 2020 Census website to get started and for basic facts, including privacy protections.  If you have already completed the 2020 Census, thank you.

The Governor did not issue an executive order today.

As always, if you have any questions, please email the appropriate town department or me.  Email is the preferred means of communication because most employees are working from home.  I have immediate access to my email and try to respond promptly.  If you contact me on Facebook, know that my response will be delayed, as I only check my F S Lynne Vanderslice Facebook account a few times a day. I generally don’t use Messenger and have limited ability to access it.

Thank you,

Lynne Vanderslice

First Selectwoman

What should you do to stop the spread?

  • Stay home.
  • Maintain a distance of 6 feet between you and another person.  This standard applies whether inside or outside.
  • Respect the Governor’s prohibition on social or recreational gatherings of more than 5 people, including leisure gatherings.
  • Consolidate your shopping and errands to minimize the numbers of days you must leave your home.  If the store parking lot is more than half full, return and home and shop at another time.
  • Take advantage of the delivery options offered by many Wilton businesses.
  • Practice your team sport on your own, not with your teammates.  The internet is full of videos and suggestions on how to do this.
  • Do walk outside. If your street is walkable, please consider walking there rather than a public trail. When the NRVT parking lot, or that of another trail, is more than 50% full, please find another place to walk.  There are 127 miles of town-owned roads, more than 80 private roads and more than 3 miles of sidewalk on state-owned roads.
  • Please respect the town’s closure of fields and recreation facilities.
