Coronavirus Update-Memorial Day Honors & Case Data

May 24th– Tomorrow is Memorial Day.  Although the traditional community events are not being held, members of the James B. Whipple American Legion Post 86 have organized remembrance activities to honor our fallen men and women.

On Saturday, members of Post 86 and Wilton C.E.R.T. placed flags on the graves of veterans in five Wilton cemeteries.  Tomorrow morning, the Connecticut Air National Guard will fly over Wilton at approximately 10:30 a.m. Later in the day, Post 86 Commander Bill Glass, three other members of Post 86 and WHS senior Nick Loafman will hold a private service. Although the public is not invited to attend, you are invited to watch a Memorial Day video prepared by the Wilton Memorial Day Committee on this link.

Thank you to Commander Bill Glass and the members of Post 86, Wilton C.E.R.T, Members of the Wilton Memorial Day Committee and those who participated in the production of the video and Nick Loafmann.

CT DPH reported 125 new cases in Fairfield Country. We passed a milestone, as cases now total 15,114. Two-thirds of the new cases were in Norwalk, Bridgeport and Danbury.  Hospitalizations increased for a second day in a row. They increased by 5 to 232. Deaths in Fairfield Country rose by 7 to 1,215. Cases in Wilton increased by 1 to 202.

Statewide, CT DPH reported 446 new cases for a total of 40,468, laboratory-confirmed cases, as of 8:30 p.m. yesterday. 210 cases have not yet been assigned to a municipality.  5,769 new tests were performed for a pandemic-to-date total of 214,136 in Connecticut.  Statewide deaths rose by 18 to 3,693.  Despite the increase in Fairfield County, statewide hospitalizations decreased by 23 patients to 701.

Now and throughout Phase 1, the most important thing you can do to protect yourself and others is to follow the law:

  • When in public and a 6-foot distance is unavoidable wear a required face covering, unless doing so would be contrary to your health because of a medical condition.  This applies whether outside or inside a retail establishment.
  • While outside exercising alone, if you aren’t wearing a face covering, maintain a 6-foot distance from others running or walking on the same road, sidewalk or trail.

As always, if you have any questions, please email the appropriate town department or me at lynne.vanderslice@wiltonct.org.

Thank you,

Lynne Vanderslice
