Coronavirus Update-New Case, Executive Order Setting Fines, Simplified Travel Advisory, Testing Questions, & Case Data

September 14th– The following are highlights from today’s CT DPH report versus the September 11th report:

  • Wilton: 1 new case. This is not the same case as noted in last night’s update.
  • Statewide:  569 new cases. 1.16% of tests performed reported positive.
  • Hospitalized Patients: Statewide, 13-net patient increase. Fairfield County, 4-net patient increase.
  • Deaths: Statewide, 5.  Fairfield County, 1.

Today, Governor Lamont announced he will be issuing an executive order, which will set fines for the violation of certain executive orders.  During the Governor’s weekly/bi-weekly calls with municipal representatives, fines have repeatedly been requested by the municipalities.  Announced fines were as follows:

  • $100 for violating mask requirement.
  • $500 for organizing an event over the size limit
  • $250 for attending an event over the size limit.

Under the anticipated executive order, Wilton police, appointed municipal designees and Wilton health officials are authorized to issue fines.  Compliance with executive orders has generally been very good in Wilton.  We are hopeful we won’t need to issue fines, but recognize our ability to do so.

The Governor also announced a forthcoming much-needed simplification of the travel advisory.  Look for that in the next few days.

Residents have inquired about the Town or the Schools requiring and sponsoring in-town COVID testing of Wilton public school students and staff.   We can’t legally require students and staff be tested. Even if we could, it’s important to remember, the total school population is approximately 4,500. One test technician can generally test up to 100 individuals per day.  There are many existing test centers in the area, which already have the necessary infrastructure, personnel and, most importantly, the availability to perform a large number of tests.

Residents have also inquired about CT DPH guidance on school.
