Coronavirus Update- Expedited Vaccines-Aged 75 & Up, Youth Sports Guidance, Vaccine & Case Data

January 11th- Today, the Governor announced residents aged 75 and above can begin receiving vaccines BY APPOINTMENT on January 18th.  The following was shared:

  • Information on how to register for an appointment by phone or online will be available THIS THURSDAY.  I will include the information in Thursday's update.
  • Initially, appointments will be made with existing vaccine providers through the appointment system, (VAMS) used for Phase 1A.  On Thursday, CT DPH will release a phone number and a special website for booking an appointment. 
  • Vaccines will be available at local drugstores in a few weeks.  Information on how to sign up with the drugstores will be released later this month. 
  • 275,000 CT residents in this age group are expected to register for an appointment.  Please, remember it will require several weeks before everyone can receive their first vaccine. 
  • Wilton Social Services will reach out to clients and Wilton-based partners to share information after it becomes available on Thursday.  
  • Hospitals will reach out to patients. 
  • Medical doctors WILL NOT have vaccines during this phase.  
  • You are not required to provide your social security number or a credit card number to receive a vaccine.  If someone asks you for this information, it is likely a scam. 

Today, the Governor announced that new K-12 sports guidance will be released later this week. The guidance is subject to stability in COVID-19 metrics. Low and moderate risk sport practices can begin on January 19th, subject to restrictions.  Competitions are expected to begin on February 1st.  Decisions on Parks and Recreation youth sports will be made after the new guidance is released and reviewed.

 As of this morning, the CDC reported the following for vaccines:

  • Connecticut:  246,875 doses of vaccines delivered. 147,174 initial doses administered. 4.2% of the state’s population received an initial dose.  This afternoon the Governor shared a slightly lower number, of which 7,865 were second doses.  Last week, just over 71,000 residents received a first dose or an average of 10,175 vaccinations per day.  The daily rate is suppressed due to low supply.  President-elect Biden indicated he will release held second doses for use as first doses.  That combined with increased manufacturing capacity and soon to be approved new vaccines should increase the supply.
  • Nationwide, 24.5 million vaccines had been delivered and 6.7 million first doses administered, increases of 9% and 38%, respectively.

Timeline information for other groups in Phase 1B should be available on Thursday. 

The following is data, as of 8:30 p.m. last night, from today’s CT DPH report versus Friday’s January 8th report:

  • Wilton:  20 new cases reported. 673 cases PTD.  Last week there were 59 new cases, compared to 25 new cases in the previous week. 
  • Statewide:  7,364 new cases.  6.33% of the 116,244 new tests reported were positive.  213,358 cases PTD.
  • Fairfield County:  1,788 new cases.  63,073 cases PTD.
  • Hospitalized Patients:  Statewide, 1,142 with a 33-net patient increase. Fairfield County, 281 with a 7-net patient increase.
  • Deaths:  Statewide, 6,416 with 92 new deaths.  Fairfield County, 1,797 with 18 new deaths.  Wilton, 45, with no new deaths.  

The following chart shows the distribution of known cases by age for the previous periods and the current 7-day period.  Newly known cases ranged in age from 8 to 68.

With the uptick in cases and the variant strain of the virus found in Connecticut, please exercise extra caution and behave as if you have the virus and as if those around you do as well.

  • Watch your distance
  • Wear a mask/face covering when you can’t maintain 6 feet of distance whether indoors or outside
  • Walk, run or bike to the right in single file when passing another person on the NRVT, sidewalks and trails
  • Wait to host indoor gatherings
  • Wash your hands
