Coronavirus Update-WestCOG Legislative Priorities, Improved Red Zone Map, Vaccine & Case Data

February 18th- Today the eighteen WestCOG member first selectpersons and mayors met with area state legislators and presented suggested priorities for the current legislative session. Over the next few weeks, I hope to provide you with in-depth information on these priorities:

  • Strategies to improve the region’s transportation network and maintain existing infrastructure.
  • Give municipalities the tools we need to reduce costs and thereby provide property tax relief to taxpayers.
  • Accelerate technology deployment, including allowing municipalities to install open access fiber in areas where the market is failing customers.
  • Protect communities and the environment, including by averting a trash crisis.
  • Accelerate a solution to the opioid crisis in Connecticut.
  • Increase federal funds coming back into Connecticut.

Red Zone Map

Updated community classifications, based on 14-day average daily new cases per 100,000 residents as of last Saturday, were published today by CT DPH.  Although, with the exception of Redding, all Southwestern Connecticut communities remained red zones, a number of rural communities throughout the state are no longer red zones. This resulted in a better statewide picture.  Wilton and surrounding communities continued to experience improvement as per this chart:
