Coronavirus Update- Senior and Disabled Tax Relief & Case Data

April 28th –At tonight’s Board of Selectmen meeting, we voted to extend the Town’s Senior and Disabled Tax Relief program filing deadline from May 15th to July 31st.  This change allows the deadline to better align with the change in the IRS filing deadline.  Relief is available to qualified taxpayers with income, as defined, of $85,700 or less.  Residents can obtain a credit or defer their taxes or both.  All qualified taxpayers receive a minimum credit of $250.  The maximum credit is $4,900. The application is available on the town website.  Please email the Assessor’s department with questions.

The State did not change the deadline to file for the State’s senior and disabled tax credit program.  The State no longer provides funding for their program.  Instead, each year since 2018, when the State announced no funding, the Board of Selectmen has provided funding for the allowable tax credits.

Declines in hospitalizations continued, both statewide and in Fairfield County.  Statewide hospitalizations, meaning the number of Coronavirus patients hospitalized, are down by 26 to 1,732. In Fairfield County, the number is down by 7 to 620 or just a few more hospitalized patients than three weeks ago.  A very good sign of how our behaving as if we have the virus and as if those around us do as well, has helped ourselves and our fellow citizens.

Today, CT DPH reports 26,312 laboratory-confirmed statewide cases with 10,874 or 41% in Fairfield County and 148 in Wilton.  491 cases have not yet been assigned to a municipality. Today’s growth in Fairfield County cases was much lower than the last four day discussed in yesterday’s update. Deaths rose to 2,089 statewide and to 747 in Fairfield County.

Today the Governor did not issue an executive order.

As always, if you have any questions, please email the appropriate town department or me at lynne.vanderslice@wiltonct.org.

Thank you,

Lynne Vanderslice

First Selectwoman

What should you do to stop the spread?

  • Stay home.
  • Maintain a distance of 6 feet between you and another person.  This standard applies whether inside or outside.
  • Wear a mask when in public.
  • Respect the Governor’s prohibition on social or recreational gatherings of more than 5 people, including leisure gatherings.
  • Consolidate your shopping and errands to minimize the numbers of days you must leave your home.  If the store parking lot is more than half full, return home and shop at another time.
  • Take advantage of the delivery options offered by many Wilton businesses.
  • Practice your team sport on your own, not with your teammates.  The internet is full of videos and suggestions on how to do this.
  • Do walk outside. If your street is walkable, please consider walking there rather than a public trail. When the NRVT parking lot, or that of another trail, is more than 50% full, please find another place to walk.  There are 127 miles of town-owned roads, more than 80 private roads and more than 3 miles of sidewalk on state-owned roads.
  • Please respect the town’s closure of fields and recreation facilities.
